Choose the Right Photographer for You

Happy Spring! The sun is shining and photographers are coming out of their winter caves and are getting ready for the busy wedding season ahead. With the wedding industry being as packed as it is, and so many fantastic photographers out there, it can get overwhelming choosing the right photographer for YOU. I’m writing this post for anyone who is in search of a photographer for their wedding day, whether that be for this summer, or for one of the upcoming years. There are a few things to keep in mind that I’ll go over below. Also, very important before I continue, if you have a photographer you have in mind or love, reach out sooner rather than later. We book up quickly!

Style

This one is kind of a no brainer but I’ll go over it anyways in case there’s something you may have missed. Each photographer has their own style that can be divided into, the kind of photos they take, and editing. Things to consider, do you like candid shots (natural photos in between the hustle and bustle of your big day), more posed photos (traditional, smiling at the camera), maybe both? Then editing, there’s dark and moody, warm, true to color, vibrant, bright and airy etc. The photographer you hire comes with a certain editing style. You need to make sure that it’s what you like.

Personality

You need to be comfortable with the person you’re hiring. We’re there on your wedding day with you almost 24/7. Make sure the photographer you hire meshes with your personality well. Do they take the time to listen to you? Do they answer all your questions? Can they make you laugh if you’re shy in front of the camera? If you want to have the best experience possible, check out websites, Instagram’s, have a consultation whether it be video, phone call, or in person. And best of all, book an engagement shoot to see how you guys work together.

Price

Before I got into the wedding industry I didn’t know how expensive everything is! Planning my own wedding, I soon realized it’s for a good reason. And a photographer is the top thing you do not want to cut corners on. You cannot have a redo of your wedding day. #havenoregrets That being said, everyone has a different budget. We totally understand that. Many photographers (ourselves included) offer payment plans. Aka, you put down a deposit to secure your date, and you can pay off the rest throughout the months.

Where to look for Photographers

There are several ways to find photographers. Namely, Instagram. You can type, for example, Bend Wedding Photographer and look at profiles or look at hashtags. Facebook is another great place to look for several vendors, not just photographers. There are many wedding groups on Facebook you can join to plan your wedding and find local vendors. Google Search is always an option, there you can also read reviews on a potential photographer. Planners, If you hire a wedding planner they should be able to provide you with some options on trusted photographers. And lastly, some people swear by sites such as Weddingwire or Zola.

Red Flags

  • Lack of communication

  • Not taking the time to get to know you

  • No contract (Always always hire someone with a contract, it protects both you and the photographer)

  • They don’t have many reviews or even an option to leave a review (learned the hard way)

  • Lack professionalism

  • They don’t have a business license

A few more things:

  • If their website or Instagram doesn’t have enough photos to give you a good idea of what a full day portfolio looks like, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for a gallery.

  • Different photographers have different package options, some may be willing to work with a lower budget for less hours.

  • Many photographers love to travel! If they’re not located in your state, reach out regardless, and ask about their travel fees.
